“An achingly lovely film – the best Sam Mendes has yet made” – Vanity Fair
Hilary, a depressed cinema manager marvellously played by Olivia Colman, works at a (fictional) cinema called the Empire on the Margate seafront in 1981 as Britain swan-dives into recession, unemployment and widespread racism. The Empire hires a new ticket-seller Stephen (played with emotional openness and sympathy by Micheal Ward), a young Black man who has an instant connection with Hilary. Together they find a sense of belonging and experience the healing power of music, cinema and community.
